IOM Bangladesh Chief Giorgi said: “Bangladesh is one of the intellectual fathers of the global compact for migration (GCM) process. Many ideas, that went into the global compact which is a global document adopted by the United Nations General Assembly came from Bangladesh.
“It is important to increase support for migrants at three points. First at the pre-departure, we have to get that stage right. We have to make sure the migrant is holding the right information and all documents are in proper order. Safety measures must be put in place to make sure that migrants are not abused once they go whether to Malaysia or Saudi Arabia or any other place.
“The second point of assistance must be in the country of destination, the country where the migrant are working. We have to make sure they receive the assistance they need. Lastly, after the migrant returns to Bangladesh, they have to be provided with social security and advice on how to save and invest money. Most importantly, if they have a bad experience, it is important to let others know about it.”
